❓1. What are the different types of headsets and which one to choose?

  • A-headset / Aheadset (without thread) : the modern, simple, robust standard, ideal for the majority of MTB.
  • Integrated (IS) : bearings directly placed in the frame, aesthetic and light.
  • Semi-integrated (ZS) : cups pressed into the frame, good rigidity/weight compromise.
  • External (EC) : visible cups, more robust but a little heavier.

👉 The choice depends mainly on the standard of your frame : we do not choose freely, we must respect what is planned by the manufacturer.

❓2. How do I check compatibility with my frame and fork?

  • Frame standard : IS / ZS / EC (or combinations: e.g. ZS44/ZS56).
  • Fork steerer diameter : straight (e.g. 1"1/8) or conical (1"1/8 → 1"1/2).
  • Headset dimensions : indicated by two numbers (ex. ZS44/56), corresponding to the internal diameter of the upper/lower spans of the frame.
  • Headset height (stack height) : influences the position of the cockpit.

👉 The most important: respect exactly the measurements of your frame + pivot.

❓3. What level of quality and which bearings to choose?

  • Steel bearings : robust, economical, good lifespan if well maintained.
  • Stainless steel bearings : more resistant to corrosion, excellent for intensive or wet use.
  • Sealed bearings : recommended in MTB to limit maintenance.
  • High-end games (e.g. machined, premium steels) : better fluidity, better lifespan, reduced weight.

👉 If you often ride in mud or rain, choose bearings stainless steel or highly waterproof.
