Tested and adopted by the vast majority of riders in the Cross-Country World Cup and DH, as well as at the Enduro World Series, MTB anti-pinch foam inserts are winning over more and more riders across all disciplines. Their role is to ensure good grip, whilst also providing comfort, as well as protecting the wheel rim and the tyre. You might think the choice is straightforward, but there are subtleties to be aware of in order to find the product that suits you. Here are a few tips on the subject!
Standards
- Tyre sizes: 26", 26+'', 27.5", 27.5+'', 29'' and 29+"
- Tyre widths: 1.9 to 2.2; 2.2 to 2.5; 2.5 to 2.7 and 2.7 to 4.0.
- Types of anti-pinch foam inserts: round, triangular or rectangular
WHAT IS AN ANTI-PINCH FOAM INSERT? AND WHY USE ONE?
An anti-pinch system is a circular band made of high-density yet ultra-lightweight foam that fits inside the tyre. It significantly reduces the risk of tyre burping, limits potential rim damage in the event of impacts, and reduces pinch flats and punctures caused by tyre sidewall compression at both the front and rear.
Besides being able to finish a ride on a flat tyre without getting off the bike — at the risk of increasing tyre wear — these systems also allow you to significantly reduce the pressure (0.1 to 0.2 bar) of the tyres in order to gain grip and comfort. However, when used in a Tubeless Ready setup, these products tend to absorb some of the sealant and add weight to the overall assembly, which can have a negative impact on the bike's overall efficiency. In some cases, the use of a specific Tubeless valve may be required.
It is worth noting that an anti-pinch foam insert is not a miracle product or a puncture-proof solution. As the name suggests, a foam insert adds protection against pinching on angular rocks and against rim deformation on heavy impacts. Using MTB tyres with lighter and thinner casings to compensate for the extra weight should also be avoided.
TYRE SIZE AND WIDTH
The size of an anti-pinch foam insert is made up of two figures: the first value corresponds to the tyre diameter and the second is a usage range based on the tyre width.
For example, a 27.5" x 2.25 / 2.50 anti-pinch foam insert is designed for a 27.5" diameter MTB tyre and for a width between 2.25" and 2.50" (or from 57 mm to 63 mm in ETRTO standard).
Bike manufacturers have developed ranges with very different models in order to best meet the demands of the various MTB riding disciplines.
TYPES OF FOAM INSERTS
Round profiles:
Round foam inserts such as the VITTORIA Air Line or also the MRWOLF Banger, perfectly wrap around the inside of the tyres. This provides additional protection against thorns, sharp stones, nails and other debris found on MTB trails. They will be ideal for All-Mountain, Trail and Cross-Country MTB riders looking for a product that can increase resistance to pinch flats.Triangular profiles:
Triangular foam inserts, such as the CUSHCORE or also the PANZER Evo, fill the empty space between the rim and the inside of the tyre. Their purpose is to protect the rim from impacts and to keep the tyre in place, particularly to prevent it from burping during sharp cornering. This type of protection is clearly aimed at Gravity (Enduro, DH) but also for mountain bikers who regularly ride very rough MTB trails.Rectangular profiles:
Rectangular foam inserts, such as the HUCK NORRIS or the SLICY Smooth, work on the same principle as triangular ones but without the insert at the rim level. They sit in the centre of the tyre and air can circulate above and below the anti-pinch protection. These models are well suited to aggressive riding disciplines such as Enduro and All-Mountain, as well as for e-bikes as they protect the rim and reduce the risk of pinch flats.
CONCLUSION
If you frequently get pinch flats and tend to damage your rims quickly at the front or rear, this means you are riding on trails that require extra protection for your pair of wheels. In this case, using this product proves useful and justified for your bike.
The choice of anti-pinch inserts will depend on several factors (budget, ease of installation, terrain and riding style, as well as compatibility with the tyre size and width). Densities and weights vary depending on the type, so it is important to take these criteria into account when making your decision.
Competitive riders and demanding MTB enthusiasts will opt for a bulkier, high-performance system, albeit at a higher price and more difficult to install on wheels; whilst occasional riders, leisure cyclists or those discovering and progressing in the sport will choose a lighter, easier-to-fit option at a lower price.
