The electrical transmission of a ATV is coming of age, with an ever-growing range of products on offer! But after all, why switch to an electric transmission? Advantage or source of problems?
Here are some answers.
Tired of replacing your cable/sheathing kit every season? That's one of the advantages of electric drive. The first enemy of a cable drive is friction. As soon as a little mud or dirt gets inside your cable/sheath kit, the friction between these two elements increases. That's when problems start. Corrosion or a lack of lubrication caused by the passage of time, or water that inevitably seeps in, cause the same type of problem. Electrics put an end to this in a fairly simple way: no more cable, no more sheathing, so no more problems.
Annoyed by the need to regularly adjust your settings? Here too, the electric solves the problem. No matter how strong it is, a steel cable works, and therefore stretches slightly, throughout its life. The opposite is true of sheathing, which compresses over time. As a result, this adjustment needs to be checked and adjusted from time to time. On a electric mountain bikethe derailleur positions itself automatically to align itself perfectly with each gear without the need for our intervention.
Finally, here are a few more bonuses... Since the adjustment is purely electronic, the field of possibilities is wide open! Depending on the brand, here are a few examples of the features available with electric bikes:
- electrically controlled fork adjustment on a single unit
- Reading and recording of speed information (sprocket/ring gear used) on a GPS
- The possibility of modifying the way gears are controlled (a single control for front and rear derailleurs, the possibility of changing gears on the left, etc.).
Despite all these advantages, however, some people may still have misgivings about electric bikes. The most frequent criticisms concern water resistance and autonomy. As far as water and mud resistance are concerned, these systems have already proved their worth over several years, particularly in Cyclocross, where conditions can be extreme. As for autonomy, depending on the version (one or two chainrings), manufacturers claim between 500 and 1,000 km, more than enough to spend three days on the road without worrying about running out of battery!
So, are you convinced by electric bikes?
