A dropper post (not to be confused with a suspension model) offers the ability to adjust saddle height using a lever in order to adopt an optimal position depending on the terrain when riding MTB.
Standards
- Travel length
- Travel type: infinite or indexed
- Cable routing: internal or external
- Actuation type: under the saddle or on the handlebar
Types of dropper posts
There is a wide variety of models with different travel amounts, often between 100 and 150 mm, from which you choose based on your riding style and the geometry of the bike. It is important not to confuse the travel of the dropper post (the drop of the telescopic tube) with the overall length of the post itself.
Two types of travel systems can be distinguished: models known as "indexed" offer several pre-set positions, while infinite travel models allow the rider to use the full range of travel across its entire length.
Regarding cable routing, there are also two options: internal cable routing inside the post and external cable routing along the dropper post. This choice will be dictated by the frame model you have.
Regarding the actuation, some models feature a lever integrated directly under the MTB saddle, but this simpler-to-install system remains slightly less easy to use while riding. That is why the model with a remote lever to be fitted on the handlebar (with specific versions depending on whether you want it on the right or left side, and above or below the bar) is becoming increasingly widespread.
Which dropper post to choose?
-
Trail / Leisure MTB
For leisure-style MTB riding, a dropper post will mainly provide more ease and safety on descents.
-
Cross-Country
For slightly more demanding rides on your hardtail MTB, a dropper post will be used to be even faster on technical sections.
-
All-Mountain / Enduro
For Enduro or All-Mountain riding on a full-suspension MTB, the dropper post provides great versatility, in keeping with these disciplines that demand as much in the climbs as in the descents.
-
DH / Freeride
For DH / Freeride, a dropper post will be practical for pedalling more efficiently on rolling sections.
