How to remove the headset from a road bike?

The headset is a wear part that contains the steering bearings. Few manufacturers supply the bearings separately; when play develops, it is time to replace the complete headset. In the case of an external or semi-integrated headset, the cups are pressed into the frame. Here is how to remove them.

  • Time: 1h00
  • Level: Difficult
  • Tools: Cup removal tool | Hammer | Fork crown race extractor

Steps

First, remove the fork from your bike.

  1. Remove the fork crown race using the extractor.
  2. Remove the headset cups one by one by striking firmly with the cup removal tool, previously positioned resting against them
Probikeshop tip: the operation is quite delicate — make sure the frame is properly secured and the cup removal tool is correctly in place before striking.

Your headset is now removed; you can take the opportunity to clean your head tube and measure the internal dimension if needed to select your next headset.
