How to fit a road bike headset?

The headset is a wear part containing the steering bearings. Few manufacturers sell the bearings separately; when play develops, it is time to replace the complete headset. In the case of an external or semi-integrated headset, the cups are pressed into the frame by force. Here is how to fit them.

  • Tools: Grease | Fork crown race driver | Cup press

Steps

  1. Slide on the fork crown race
    Probikeshop Tip: the tapered part should face upwards, it comes into contact with the bearing.

  2. Fit the fork star nut onto the fork by tapping moderately on the star nut driver previously positioned A.
    Probikeshop Tip: to make fitting easier, you can apply a little grease.

  3. Grease the headtube openings B then press the bare headset cups into place.

  4. Press the cups c into the frame using the cup press until they are fully seated against the frame.
    Probikeshop Tip: during this delicate operation, make sure the cups are entering the frame perfectly straight at all times.

  5. Grease the bearing housings D before fitting them. Probikeshop Tip: pay attention to the fitting direction.

  6. Slide the fork into the frame then fit the washer/top cap assembly as indicated in your headset manual E.

  7. Then refit your cockpit

Now that the headset is fitted, you will need to adjust it.
